Identifying Potential Indicators of Neighbourhood Solar Access in Urban Planning

Solar access describes the capacity of urban spaces to receive sunlight and daylight. Rapid urbanization unbridled densification pose a threat sustainable solar access, reducing penetration daylight into cities. To effectively assess at such an early design stage, planning level, it is critical that evaluation metrics are simple reliable. This paper examines cross section metrics, from more complex ones, find potential performance indicators for evaluations. The metric datasets were created based on iterations homogeneous neighbourhood designs, three commonest typologies in Swedish context: courtyard, slab, tower. results validated using case studies sampled districts Malmö. findings indicate geometrical latitudinal may be suitable assessing designs due high correlation with built density. Potential aimed indoor outdoor daylighting (VSC, SVF) sunlighting (ASH_F, RD_G) stages suggested. Possible methods applying provided database assessments proposed. Future work should evidence-based thresholds values establish benchmarks.
